Colin’s Comments: The Pastor’s Desk
Seasons Greetings, friends and family of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Janesville! Can you believe that it’s been a year since I first came here? This has certainly been an interesting year, and most certainly not how I would have wanted to begin my ministry with you all. At the same time, I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to minister with such a loving community during this time of pandemic. I came with so many plans, and I know many in the church had plans that we wanted to implement as well, and many of those plans have had to change and transform into something different. What I can say is that I am proud of the virtual (online) ministry that we’ve been able to form, and I am proud of each and every one of you. Things that I look forward to sharing with you in the next few weeks include daily Zoom devotions for Advent and Christmas-Tide, a special Longest Night service, and more! What I need from you is your prayers for each other and for me as we do our best to bring you engaging services and opportunities to join in fellowship with eachother. On a personal note, I have recently moved to 1326 Midvale Drive #1 in Janesville, and I look forward to a time after covid that I can host people for dinner and games. My classes have been going well, and next semester I will be taking a doctoral level course regarding preaching, to polish my preaching skills. I am well and I pray that you are also. Please remember that God loves you and so do I!
~Rev. Colin A. Douglas
Longest Night Service: Our Longest Night Service will be a night of remembrance and embracing the grief that many of us feel during this Advent and Christmas season. It is an opportunity to speak our sorrow, join in music, and share in a craft project. This service will most likely be via Zoom, more information coming soon!
Meet our Minster’s In Training
My name is Hannah Degner. I am in my last year on seminary at Evangelical Theological Seminary. I am in the Army Reserves as a Chaplain Candidate. I received my calling to Army Chaplaincy when I was in college at Marquette University. Between receiving that call and now, I have gotten married and moved to Janesville. My husband and I have decided that staying in the Army Reserves is the right place for us. I am currently listening to see what else God has in store for me because Army Chaplaincy is not going to be my full time career. I grew up in the Wesleyan Church and am grateful for what they taught me about God. My theology has since then changed and it aligns more closely with the Disciples. I love the openness and love that fuels this church. Thank you for letting me be here! Can’t wait to meet more of you when we can safely worship together again!
My name is Moses Hernandez McGavin and I am currently a senior studying Dramatic Writing at NYU. Originally when I went to school, it was my intention to become a playwright and work in a non-profit theater in New York City. I worked at various theater companies and TV shows in New York, but I heard my calling to ministry when I served as a Student Fellow for the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call to Moral Revival when I was a junior in college. Since then, I’ve served as a coordinating committee member for the Wisconsin Poor People’s Campaign, an Arts and Culture intern with the Kairos Center, a member of the GenNowPPC Organizing Force, and a student the University of the Poor. I hope to enroll. in seminary after undergrad with an emphasis on Biblical Studies. I am so excited to have joined your church!
